Today we ask ourselves...why lice are coming back? Lice have a parasitic life. They need humans to survive, otherwise they die in less than 48 hours due to starvation and temperature problems.
And... why do they reappear? There are several reasons. Some of the most common are:
- Considering that our heads are their main "hotels", we must be alert to recurrent infestations. The treatment we have used is not effective in completely eliminating head lice. Some lice can be very resistant and it is enough for a single female to survive for the problem to continue.
- We have not removed the nits. By killing the adult lice with the treatment, the nits have remained alive and when they hatch they generate a new population of nymphs.
- We have not carried out a proper cleaning of the home to remove the insects that have left the head after the anti-lice treatment.
- We have not properly cleaned the infested person's personal belongings and clothing.
10 MEASURES TO AVOID RE-INFESTATION
To prevent head lice from coming back we are going to list a series of main measures to take into account. So, take note of each one of them if you want to more effectively combat the problem of head lice:
Measure 1
Hairbrushes and combs should not be shared. Hats, hair ornaments, bed linen, towels and clothing should not be shared with anyone who has pediculosis.
Measure 2
Check that your child's school or day care centre has a protocol for dealing with outbreaks of head lice. Ask what measures they take to prevent infection and maintain cleanliness.
Measure 3
At home, wash bed linen and other clothing used by the infested person (both before and after treatment) in the washing machine in hot water. Dry the clothes at a high temperature.
Measure 4
Clothes and items that cannot be washed with water are best taken to the dry cleaners for dry cleaning.
Measure 5
No anti-lice product completely kills the nits, you must also use the lendrera to remove the eggs. And comb the child with a comb every 2 or 3 days for at least a month.
Measure 6
If it is frequent, it may be facilitated by the conditions of the environment. Take the necessary hygienic measures to prevent live lice that fall out of the hair from hanging around on sofas, pillows...
Measure 7
Washing your head (even if you wash it with hot water) does not get rid of lice. Lice prefer clean heads. To avoid them you should use repellent products (waxes and anti-lice sprays).
Measure 8
Instead of hiding the problem from teachers, the first thing to do is to report it so that preventive measures can be taken at the school or kindergarten.
Measure 9
While the child is under treatment or in the observation phase, avoid head-to-head contact during play and other household activities. Hair-to-hair contact is the most common way in which head lice are passed.
Measure 10
Don't lie on beds, sofas, pillows, rugs or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person. Lice can survive for a short time outside the human head, but don't be overconfident.
You should know that hair lice that infect humans do not parasitise on pets or other animals. So don't worry if you also have dogs or cats at home 😉.
