It has been a few months since the children started to go to school and at the beginning of winter, colds, flu and other problems such as sinusitis appear. Acting in time is the key for your children to be able to continue with their daily routine in good health, so we are going to talk to you about how to prevent sinusitis in children.
Sinusitis consists of the inflammation of the sinuses as a result of a virus or an allergy, causing an obstruction which causes, among other things, congestion, sore throat, headache, nosebleeds or runny nose, cough, tiredness, toothache, lack of smell, malaise and fever.
Types of sinusitis and causes
To protect your children against sinusitis you should know that there are 3 types:
- Acute bacterial sinusitis. It is caused by bacteria and the symptoms last for approximately 4 weeks. It manifests with pain in different areas of the face depending on which sinus is inflamed.
- Chronic bacterial sinusitis. This is a type of sinusitis that persists for 3 months or more. The congestion is permanent and occurs mainly in the mornings.
- Fungal sinusitis. This type of sinusitis has two subtypes, invasive and non-invasive. Non-invasive sinusitis is chronic and can cause obstruction. Invasive sinusitis can be very aggressive or progressive. depending on the state of the immune system of the person.
Based on the above, we can deduce that there are various causes that can lead to the appearance of sinusitis, such as the following:
- Diseases resulting from fungi, viruses or bacteria, such as asthma, allergies, flu or colds.
- Breathing pollutants such as tobacco smoke or polluted air.
- Low blood sugar levels that can affect the sinuses.
- Sudden changes in pressure due to an aeroplane flight, for example.
- Nasal septum deviation or other defects affecting the septum.
In any case, if you detect symptoms of sinusitis in your child, it is advisable to take him/her to a specialist as soon as possible for diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
Preventing sinusitis in children
To prevent your child from getting sinusitis, you can take into account simple tips that will help you prevent it, such as the ones we propose below:
- Have him drink plenty of fluids. Hydration makes it easier for the mucus to dissolve and not block the airways. This can be water, milk, soup or other liquids.
- Take measures to avoid colds and flu. Make sure they don't catch cold and avoid contagion. Simple gestures such as washing your hands with soap can prevent the transmission of colds.
- Discover the benefits of propolis and vitamin C. You can find products such as capsules, syrups or candies on the market with vitamin C, propolis and zinc to protect your child's immune system and prevent sinusitis from developing.
- Avoid smoke. Take care that your child does not come into contact with tobacco smoke or pollution. Clean air is essential for your health and that of your children.
- Boost your child's immune system. In addition to products containing propolis to boost your child's immune system, it is important to incorporate fruit and vegetables into your child's diet to provide antioxidants and help the body fight infections. Fruits such as oranges, lemons and guavas provide vitamin C, for example.
- It reduces stress. The fast pace of everyday life not only stresses us as parents, but children can also feel the stress and tiredness of having to do homework, get up early or go to school every day. This stress can affect the immune system and must be reduced in order to prevent sinusitis. Encourage your child to play sports and games to help them relax.
- Acts fast against allergies. If your child has allergy symptoms, you should take him or her to the doctor as soon as possible to act quickly and administer the appropriate treatment so that the situation does not escalate into sinusitis.
- Use a humidifier. To complete the hydration of the body with that of your home environment, you can use a humidifier to prevent dryness and facilitate breathing.
- Ask your doctor about the flu vaccine. In addition to all of the above, you can consult your doctor about whether or not your child should be vaccinated against influenza.
Preventing sinusitis in children is therefore possible with simple gestures that you can incorporate into your child's daily routine and that will prevent complications affecting their health.
