The good weather is here, so we welcome walks, trips to the pool, to the park, walks in the countryside... But we also welcome the annoying bites.

Children have a higher body temperature than adults and therefore bees, wasps, mosquitoes and spiders often choose them as perfect targets to attack. It is important to know what to do if children are stung and how to prevent them.

What causes stings?

As a general rule, when we are bitten by an insect, the affected area turns red and causes a welt on the skin. This usually causes itching, pain and in some cases allergic reactions. In adults and children, the symptoms are the same. Although it may vary depending on the type of insect that bites us.

Most common types of stings and characteristics

-Mosquito bites: itching and itching.

-Stings from wasps and bees: wheals and pain. The swelling may increase in size after a few hours. It is important to know that bees leave their sting in the skin, wasps do not.

-Spider bites: The bead with two central dots in the middle.

Our tips

-Apply ice. For any type of sting. It is an easy and temporary remedy used to reduce swelling and itching. Wrap it in a cloth, do not apply it directly so as not to burn the skin.

-Use tweezers. If the sting is a bee sting, we advise you to remove the insect without compressing it, as if you do so it may expel more venom. If you use tweezers it will be easier.

Is there a way to prevent these bites?

There is no scientific way to stop insects biting us, but there are habits or products that can help.

  • Avoid strong perfumes as they attract them.
  • Avoid walking in wet areas.
  • Avoid brightly coloured clothing.
  • Install mosquito nets.
  • Use of insecticides.
  • Anti-mosquito and ultrasound sockets.
  • Use of repellents (bracelets, sprays...)
  • Cleanliness and tidiness at home to prevent nesting.

In the event of a severe case of sting allergy (swelling of the mouth, neck, face or hives and difficulty breathing), the best thing to do is to go to the emergency room immediately. Remember that sting allergies are more common during childhood, but in most cases the symptoms are usually mild.
