Christmas is here, one of the times when children enjoy the most. Lights, presents, holidays, being with the family, Christmas activities around the city... And one of the best times to teach them the importance of certain values that, although they are significant throughout the year, at Christmas they take on a little more relevance. What are these values?
- Solidarity: At Christmas, there are a large number of campaigns to collect food, clothes or toys for those who are in a precarious situation at this time of year. Remind your children that many children are not as lucky as they are and take part in these campaigns. Involve them in this type of project. It is a good time to talk to them about poverty and what it implies.
- Generosity: Consumerism is the order of the day, especially at Christmas. If we want to teach them values for life, we must also start with ourselves. This Christmas get together with your children and see together what things, even if they are important items for them, can be given to disadvantaged people.
- Be grateful: is a good time to learn about the value of gratitude, especially for children who are not very aware of the value of things. This is why it is important to teach children to be grateful for what people do for them, and to be thankful for what they have. For example, when they are served a meal or given a gift.
- Share: Although this is closely related to generosity and solidarity, children find it very difficult to share their things, so we have to teach them in a positive way the feeling of joy they will feel when they share their things with someone who has less. That is why we have to teach them in a positive way the feeling of joy they will feel when they share their things with someone who has less. If you have three toys, why not share one with a friend or a child in the playground?
- Sorry: Acknowledging mistakes is never easy, and asking for forgiveness and even forgiving someone is not an easy task. For example, apologising to our children for an act or scolding is a very positive thing, as we teach and show them how to do it. We are their example.
It will help our children to mature and grow up with healthy and appropriate values that will serve them for the rest of their lives. Merry Christmas.
